Jaguar's classic saloon car heritage has returned in the shape of the new X200 model, the Jaguar S-Type.
In 1963 the original Jaguar S-Type went on sale, derived from Jaguar's sporty Mk II saloons available in 2.4, 3.4 and the powerful 3.8 litre engine configurations. A car well advanced in it's time featured four wheel disc brakes, independent rear suspension, excellent handling, lots of leather and the traditional walnut timber trims.
In keeping with tradition the new S-Type has outstanding ride, handling and performance with style maintaing Jaguar's 50 plus year heritage of "grace, pace and space".
The new Jaguar S-Type was on show at Melbourne's Motor Show in March, and event coinciding with the Formula One Grand Prix, won by Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine.
The "Mark II - S-Type" is being built at the new facility at Jaguar's Castle Bromwich plant in Birmingham.
The new engine line up for the S-Type includes the all-new 3.0 litre AJ-V6 engine mated with a choice of 5 speed manual (At Last), or an optional automatic transmission. A second engine choice is the 4.0 Litre AJ-V8 which comes with a standard 5 speed electronic automatic transmission.
The S-Type's optional Dynamic Stability Control system helps to prevent oversteer and works in unison with the standard 4 channel ABS. Having owned Jaguars since my first 1959 Mark I, later a 3.8 Mark II, then 3 XJ's later to my present Soverign, braking in Jaguars has never really been a problem…unless the frequent screech behind you from over enthusiastic and less experienced drivers causes you some dismay.
Topping off the handling package is Jaguar's Computer Active Technology Suspension (an option).
Bodywork is also redefined in the new production facility; Utilizing plasma welding techniques, laser cameras are used to check dimensions / tolerances throughout the assembly process.
As with earlier Jaguar models, climate control air-conditioning is standard with side to side temperature control for additional comfort. |
